Study in Italy for Pakistani Students 2027: Admission, Scholarships and Visa Guide

Study in Italy for Pakistani students in 2027: admission, scholarships, DSU, MAECI, bank balance, visa requirements, costs and application timeline.

Study in Italy for Pakistani Students 2027: Admission, Scholarships and Visa Guide

If you want to study in Italy in September 2027, you now need at least €10,179.85 a year in a bank account in your own name. That figure comes from the Embassy of Italy in Islamabad's study visa checklist, yet many Pakistani websites still quote the old €6,947.33.

The deadline moved too. For 2027/28, you must submit your visa application by 31 October 2027. That is a full month earlier than this year's deadline of 30 November 2026.

In short, you need an admission letter from an Italian university, a validated pre-enrolment on Universitaly (the free government portal), B2 English, the bank balance above, and a Type D study visa. The two main funding routes are need-based DSU grants and MAECI government scholarships. All figures below are correct as of September 2026.

What changed in the Italy study visa rules for 2027?

The recent changes in Italy study visa rules come from the MUR procedures for international students. MUR is Italy's Ministry of University and Research. Its rules cover both 2026/27 and 2027/28, so the Italy study visa 2026 rules are also your 2027 rules.

If you read an older guide on studying in Italy for Pakistani students in 2026, most of its steps still hold. Check its money and deadline figures, because those changed.

The bank balance rose from €6,947.33 to €10,179.85 a year

The old rule asked for €534.41 a month, or €6,947.33 a year. The new minimum is €10,179.85 a year, which is 46.5% more. The money must sit in an account in the student's name.

The visa deadline is 31 October 2027, but your university's deadline comes first

31 October 2027 is the last day to submit a visa application for 2027/28. Your university can close pre-enrolment much earlier. Sapienza University of Rome closed it for 2026/27 on 30 June 2026.

Universities can now validate only a limited number of pre-enrolments. Once a university reaches its number, Universitaly blocks further validations. Validation also does not promise a visa, because the embassy makes the final decision.

Visa appointments now arrive by email after validation

For 2026/27, BLS-Intiana, the embassy's visa partner, emailed appointments to students after their university validated their pre-enrolment. Slots went out in order of validation date, so early validation meant an early appointment. The Embassy of Italy also warned that it has no WhatsApp number and never takes money for study visa appointments.

The CEnT-S test replaced the English TOLC tests

One of the study in Italy recent updates is a new entry test. CISIA, the body that runs Italian university entry tests, launched the CEnT-S on 4 November 2025. Many English-taught bachelor's degrees in engineering, economics, pharmacy, and science now use it. The test has 55 questions, lasts 110 minutes, costs €55, and you can take it online from home.

What do you need for Italy university admission from Pakistan?

Italy university admission works in two steps. First, the university accepts you. Then you pre-enrol on Universitaly so the embassy can process your visa. The same steps apply to all study in Italy for international students who need a visa.

Bachelor's in Italy after FSc, ICS, FA or A-Levels

Italian universities for international students follow one national rule: you need at least 12 years of schooling. Pakistani Intermediate (FSc, ICS or FA) completes 12 years, but Matric alone does not. A-Level students should confirm their subjects with the university.

Master's in Italy after a 16-year bachelor's degree

A master's degree (Laurea Magistrale) needs a bachelor's degree that the university accepts as equal to an Italian one. For Pakistani students, that usually means a 16-year degree. If you hold a 14-year BA or BSc, ask the university and CIMEA, Italy's degree recognition centre, before you pay any fee.

Entry tests: CEnT-S, IMAT or no test at all

English-taught bachelor's courses in science, engineering and economics often ask for the CEnT-S. English-taught medicine and dentistry use the IMAT, which you register for through Universitaly. Some courses need no test. The University of Siena's Economics and Management bachelor's asked for none for 2026/27, so always read the course's call for applications, called the bando.

Degree recognition and the apostille on your documents

The embassy accepts either a CIMEA Statement of Comparability with a Statement of Verification, or a Declaration of Value (DOV). Your university will tell you which one it wants.

Every Pakistani document also needs an apostille from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. MOFA's own checklist says degrees must first be attested by HEC, and board certificates by IBCC. NADRA documents go straight to MOFA.

Which IELTS bands are required in Italy, and do you always need IELTS?

The IELTS bands required in Italy depend on the university and the course. For the visa, the embassy asks for B2 English, which is roughly IELTS 5.5 to 6.5.

MOI letter or IELTS: what the embassy accepts for the visa

Some universities admit students with an English medium of instruction (MOI) letter. The visa is a separate check. The embassy asks for a certificate showing at least B2 in listening, reading, speaking, and writing, and names IELTS and TOEFL as examples. A four-skill B2 certificate from an Italian university also works.

Thinking about a PTE test booking instead? Confirm with your university and the embassy first. Italian-taught courses need B2 Italian from an approved body, such as the University for Foreigners of Perugia.

IELTS and TOEFL exam fees in Pakistan

The IELTS exam fee in Pakistan went up on 9 June 2026. The British Council now charges PKR 75,600 in Islamabad, Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Quetta, Peshawar, Abbottabad and Mirpur, and PKR 76,240 in Lahore and other Punjab cities. IDP sets its own price, so check its booking page too.

The TOEFL exam fee in Pakistan is set in US dollars, so the rupee amount changes with the exchange rate. ETS shows the final price in your account before you pay.

Which public universities in Italy suit international students?

Public universities in Italy set their own fees. Some base them on family income, while others, such as Padua, charge non-EU students a fixed fee. There is no single list of the best universities in Italy for everyone, so choose by course, city costs, and the region that runs your scholarship.

Politecnico di Milano, known for engineering, architecture, and design, runs its own scholarship office. The University of Bologna, founded in 1088, gets its scholarships through ER.GO. Sapienza in Rome works with DiSCo Lazio, the University of Pisa with DSU Toscana, and the University of Trieste with ARDiS. The University of Padua runs its regional scholarships itself.

For example, at the University of Padua, non-EU students whose family lives abroad pay a fixed fee of €2,790 or €2,990 a year, depending on the subject. Private universities, such as Bocconi, charge more and run their own scholarships.

Italy scholarships 2027: which ones are fully funded?

There is no "fully funded study visa in Italy". The visa and the scholarship are separate things. When people talk about a fully funded scholarship in Italy, they usually mean a DSU regional grant or a MAECI government award.

DSU regional scholarship: based on family income, not CGPA

DSU is a need-based scholarship in Italy that looks at your family's income, not your grades. First-year students qualify on income alone, so a low CGPA does not stop you.

In the Italy scholarships 2026 round, the ER.GO call in Emilia-Romagna set a family income limit (ISEE) of €25,000. Its top yearly grant for students living away from home was €7,171.11, about PKR 2.28 million, plus a full university fee waiver. Applications ran from 23 June to 24 August 2026.

Each region sets its own dates. DSU Toscana, which covers the University of Pisa, closed on 7 September 2026. You must also pass exams to keep the grant. At ER.GO, first-year bachelor's students need 20 credits by 30 November 2027, or they pay the money back.

ISEE documents you need from Pakistan

ER.GO asks for income and property papers issued by Pakistani authorities, apostilled and translated into Italian. It does not accept self-declarations. For 2026/27, it wants family composition, each adult's 2025 income, property owned on 31 December 2025, and family savings. Students from Italy's list of "particularly poor" countries can use a simpler certificate, but Pakistan was not on the 2025/26 list, so plan for the full set of papers.

Italian government (MAECI) scholarship: dates and age limits

For the latest scholarships update in Italy, check the Study in Italy portal, where MAECI publishes its call. The 2026/27 call closed at 14:00 Italian time on 26 March 2026. The age limit was 28 for master's and 30 for PhD applicants. The 2027/28 call had not been published when we checked in September 2026.

Many universities also run their own fee waivers and merit awards. Look for universities in Italy with scholarships on each university's own website.

How much does it cost to study in Italy from Pakistan?

The total Italy study visa cost goes far beyond the €50 visa fee, which the Embassy of Italy set at PKR 16,250 for July to September 2026. Living costs are the real budget. Other rupee figures in the table use about PKR 318 per euro, the interbank rate on 21 September 2026, so check the rate on the day you pay.

Based on the University of Bologna's cost guide, rent and food in Bologna come to about €660 a month before bills. Milan costs more. Apostille and translation fees vary, and BLS-Intiana may add a service charge, so ask for these costs in writing first.

What are the Italy study visa requirements for Pakistan in 2027?

The official list of Italy study visa requirements for Pakistan is the embassy's study visa checklist, updated in June 2026. BLS-Intiana applies the new checklists to appointments from 6 July.

The documents you need for the Italy study visa

For you: the national visa (D) form, one recent photo, your CNIC, and a residence certificate. Your passport must stay valid for at least 3 months after the visa ends, and you need copies of old visas. Add a flight reservation and health insurance of at least €30,000 that covers the whole Schengen area.

For your studies: your validated Universitaly pre-enrolment, signed by you, and the admission letter. Add CIMEA statements or a DOV, apostilled education documents translated into Italian, a B2 language certificate, and a motivation letter to the visa officer.

For your family and money: proof of funds, sponsor papers, and a NADRA Family Registration Certificate in English, apostilled and issued in the last 6 months. The embassy treats documents as valid for six months from issue, so do not apostille everything a year early.

Accommodation proof: the three options the embassy accepts

You can show a hotel, residence, or holiday booking. You can show a hosting declaration from a private person, on the official form. Or you can show a declaration from your university that covers your accommodation.

How the embassy checks your bank statement

For an Italy student visa, the minimum is €10,179.85 a year in an account in the student's name. The embassy does not accept cash, guarantees from people outside the family, bank guarantees, or surety bonds.

It also does not judge a file on one day's balance or a one-off deposit. It looks at whether your family can support you every month of the course.

A sponsor, such as a parent or a relative up to the fourth degree, signs an affidavit. It states the amount, where the money comes from, and how long the support lasts. The affidavit must be apostilled and translated into Italian.

A scholarship counts as proof of funds only when you can show the award. ER.GO published its provisional 2026/27 ranking on 20 October 2026, late in the visa season, so do not plan your visa money around a DSU grant.

Sponsor documents for employed, business and retired sponsors

An employed sponsor needs tax returns for the last 3 years and 6 months of pay slips. They also need 6 months of bank statements signed and stamped by the bank, the job contract, and a letter from the employer.

A business owner needs the company registration certificate, the title or partnership deed, and registration with the Chamber of Commerce or another government body. A retired sponsor needs pension statements for the last 6 months.

Islamabad or Karachi: where do you apply?

You can only apply at the BLS-Intiana centre for the area where you permanently live, as the Embassy of Italy explains.

If you live in Punjab, KP, Islamabad, or the northern areas, apply in Islamabad, Lahore, Faisalabad, or Multan. The Embassy in Islamabad decides your visa. If you live in Sindh or Balochistan, apply in Karachi or Quetta, and the Consulate General in Karachi decides.

Writing the motivation letter for the visa officer

The embassy lists this letter as a required document. A strong letter explains why you chose this course, at this university, in Italy. It links the degree to a job you can name in Pakistan and explains any study gap with dates. Every number in it should match your bank and sponsor papers. Overseas study consultants can review it, but the story must be your own.

After you arrive in Italy: permit, tax code and work hours

Apply for your permesso di soggiorno (residence permit) within 8 working days of arrival. The Polizia di Stato sets this rule. You start by picking up a postal kit at a Poste Italiane office.

You will also need a codice fiscale, the Italian tax code, for things like a rental contract and a SIM card. With a study permit, you can work up to 20 hours a week and 1,040 hours a year.

Why do Italy study visas get refused, and what can you do next?

These problems each break a rule in the embassy checklist. Watch for money kept only in a parent's account, or a large deposit with no clear source. Other problems are documents older than six months, the wrong visa centre, an MOI letter instead of B2 proof, and a pre-enrolment that was never validated.

A refusal is not the end. You can challenge it at the Regional Administrative Tribunal within 60 days, according to the EU Immigration Portal. You can also fix the problem and apply again before 31 October 2027. Good consultants for education abroad check every point above before you submit.

How to choose a study abroad consultant for an Italy study visa

Many students search for a consultant near me or a study abroad consultancy in Karachi. Wherever you look, the best study abroad consultant for Italy study visa files will pass five simple checks.

They quote €10,179.85, not the old €6,947.33. They never promise a visa, because only the embassy decides. They never charge for embassy appointments, because appointments are free. They give you their fees in writing before you pay. And their advisers have studied or lived in Italy or Europe.

Use the same checks for any study abroad consultants in Pakistan, including us at Global Mobility Experts. We were founded in 2022 by Muhammad Yasir Shakil and co-founder Rafia Tariq, two Pakistani graduates living in Europe.

Study in Italy FAQs for Pakistani students

Is IELTS required for an Italy study visa?

Some sites say IELTS is not required for Italy study visa applications. That is only half true. Universities may accept an MOI letter, but the embassy asks for B2 English in all four skills.

How much bank balance do I need?

Under the study in Italy updated requirements, you need at least €10,179.85 a year in the student's name. That is about PKR 3.24 million at PKR 318 per euro (21 September 2026).

What is the Italy visa fee from Pakistan?

The Italy visa fee from Pakistan is €50 for a type D study visa. The embassy set it at PKR 16,250 for July to September 2026, and it updates the rupee amount every quarter.

Is studying in Italy free for Pakistani students?

Not automatically. A DSU grant can work like a fully funded program in Italy, waiving fees and paying a yearly grant, but only if your family income qualifies and you pass enough exams.

Can I apply for a master's in Italy with a 14-year degree?

It depends. Some universities in Italy for international students do not accept a 14-year degree for a master's. Check with the university and CIMEA before you pay any application fee.

Is there an age limit or study gap limit?

The MAECI study in Italy scholarship 2026 call sets age limits of 28 for master's and 30 for PhD. For admission and the visa, explain any study gap in your motivation letter.

Can I work while studying in Italy?

Yes. Rules for study in Italy for international students allow work of up to 20 hours a week and 1,040 hours a year on a study permit, according to the EU Immigration Portal.

Can I stay in Italy after graduating?

Yes. After you study in Italy and finish a bachelor's or master's, you can convert your study permit into a one-year job-search permit, if you meet the conditions.

What happens if my Italy study visa is refused?

You can challenge it at the Regional Administrative Tribunal within 60 days, or fix the problem and reapply. Reapplying adds to your Italy study visa cost, because you pay the €50 fee again.

When should I start applying for the 2027 intake?

Start now. One of the study in Italy recent updates is an earlier visa deadline, 31 October 2027. University deadlines come sooner. Sapienza's 2026/27 pre-enrolment closed on 30 June 2026.

Your next step for the September 2027 Italy intake

If you plan to study in Italy in 2027, start with your university shortlist and then work backwards from the admission, scholarship, pre-enrolment and visa deadlines.

  • Choose courses that match your previous education.
  • Check the university's English or Italian language requirement.
  • Prepare CIMEA or DOV documents if required.
  • Build a genuine financial history and prepare sponsor documents.
  • Apply for DSU, MAECI or university scholarships when eligible.
  • Complete Universitaly pre-enrolment and wait for validation.
  • Prepare the Type D visa file according to the current embassy checklist.

Requirements, fees and deadlines can change, so verify the current university, scholarship and Italian diplomatic mission requirements before submitting your application.
